Scientists invent LED bulb for internet of things

Researchers at the Disney Research Center and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich have co-invented a visible light communication (VLC) network technology that enables LED light bulbs to communicate in a way that is compatible with Internet protocol. The researchers said that this progress can make VLC play an important role in the field of Internet of Things (IoT).

To implement their prototypes, researchers used commercial off-the-shelf LED bulbs to transmit and receive visible light signals after modification. These improvements include the Atheros AR9331 SoC running an embedded OpenWrt Linux operating system, VLC controller modules, and an additional 3.3 V for SoC and controllers.

The controller acts like an Ethernet interface and is compatible with Internet protocols such as TCP and UDP. The system is capable of creating networks with speeds up to 1 kbit / s. (Shirley translation)
