DEARBORN, MI, USA (January 8, 2013) Ford Motor Company has expanded the scope of its auto parts regeneration project to bumpers and headlights, regenerating approximately 62,000 bumpers and 26,000 vehicles in the past two years headlight.
Kim Goering, head of Ford's remanufacturing and remanufacturing project, said in a press release: "Most of the parts that are returned to us through the [renewable] plan are still of great value. We do everything we can to extend these parts. This has become a persuasive business case."
Ford Motor Company, headquartered in Dearborn, Mich., launched this Core Recovery Program back in 2003. It initially recaptured large metal parts such as engine parts, as well as valuable electronic sensors and injectors. . According to Ford’s estimation, 120 million pounds (approximately 55,000 tons) of discarded parts have been regenerated since the program was launched.
Two years ago, Ford expanded the scope of recycling to bumpers and headlights because of the large amount of plastic that can be recycled.
Today, the general headlights are assembled from multiple parts and contain expensive polycarbonate and other engineering plastics. Reflectors, wiring harnesses and light bulbs are also very valuable, Ford's managers say.
Bumpers are generally 5-6 feet (1.5-1.8 meters) long and weigh 20 pounds (9 kilograms).
Goering said: "We have rapidly increased the number of parts we recycle. We can see the importance of the recycling program."
The recycling program is carried out at Ford's major automotive repair shops, and operates in a manner similar to the waste bottle recycling system. As long as the distributor pays a certain fee for each new part, it can use the damaged parts to replace it with old ones, but then the old parts can be returned as long as they can be recovered.
Damaged parts are usually sent to third-party companies that specialize in parts regeneration. In the case of bumpers, for example, the bumpers are reground to allow thermoplastic polyolefins and other thermoplastics to be reused. Other parts that can still be used can be repaired, cleaned and tested, and then sold twice. For parts that cannot be repaired or recycled, Ford will oversee its disposal process.
Mark Trombetta, head of the Ford Regional Core Recovery Center Network, said that, in addition to being environmentally friendly, the program will also prevent damaged Ford parts from continuing to circulate in the market unless the parts pass the test. This helps Ford set up a good quality image.
Goering said: "We design business cases for different products. This is a difficult and huge task, because there are a lot of parts used in vehicles and they are quite complicated."
