Tiny Chemical Iris Phone Camera

A new type of chemical iris camera designed for smart phones has been successfully developed by researchers in Germany. Traditional cameras use mechanical plates to change the size of the aperture through which light enters. The new micro-iris feature makes it opaque when passing a small voltage. Ultra-thin devices can stimulate the development of a new generation of mobile phones and tablets.


The principle of electrochromic iris can be used to control transmitted light and depth focus. In the human eye, the iris camera controls the amount of light reaching a sensor to affect the overall image. The device is made of two glass substrates sandwiched together, each carrying a film with electrochromic polymer PEDOT attached. The potential of the iris lies in its current state, which is mainly a comparison of commercial PEDOT materials that absorb light and have relatively short switching times.
