Nippon Steel and Nippon Yusen have recently stated that they have jointly developed anti-corrosion steel sheets for the construction of very large tankers, saving the cost of expensive anti-corrosion coatings for shipyard shipbuilding.
According to the introduction of the two companies, the new steel plate they jointly developed is called Nippon Steel Environmental Protection No. 1, and its anti-corrosion capacity is five times that of ordinary marine steel plates. After reducing the anti-corrosion coating process, shipyards do not have to use additives and compounds that have an impact on the environment.
Japan’s largest shipping company, Japan Post, said that in the past two and a half years, the steel plate was used as the bottom of the “Takamine†super-large tanker, and all the newly built tankers, including the five new tankers that have been ordered, Both will be constructed using this steel plate.
Nippon Steel and Nippon Yusen said they are considering offering such steel plates to competitors. The chairman of the Nippon Steel Plate Branch said at a press conference, "We have received an inquiry for this type of marine steel plate. At present, we have enough production capacity to meet the demand.
It is reported that the construction of an ultra-large oil tanker requires approximately 2,500 tons of this steel plate. Due to the corrosion of the brine containing crude oil, it usually causes many small depressions on the inner surface of the tanker, resulting in oil leakage.
Nippon Steel said that due to the serious potential corrosion effects of ordinary steel plates, the International Maritime Organization is considering enforcing all new oil tankers to paint anti-corrosion coatings. However, the International Maritime Organization is also considering the use of Nippon Steel Environmental Protection No. 1 steel plate as a marine steel plate to prevent oil tank corrosion, because this steel plate has good corrosion resistance.
