On October 29, local time, the general-purpose two-mode hybrid transmission was put into production at the Baltimore, Maryland plant. It is reported that the transmission was jointly developed by GM and BMW and DaimlerChrysler before the “separationâ€.
On the same day, GM's first dual-mode hybrid transmission was rolled off the line at the Baltimore transmission plant and a ceremony was held for it. According to GM, 78% of the parts on the transmission were sourced from US suppliers.
GM's best-selling 08 Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon large hybrid SUVs will be the first to use the new dual-mode transmission, and it is reported that the fuel economy of the new GM model will reach 21 mpg. Next year, GM will also produce a large number of Cadillac Escalade SUVs with dual-mode transmissions, Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups. GM's Baltimore facility will also offer dual-mode transmissions for medium-sized SUVs such as Chrysler Aspen and Dodge Durango.
