·Top 10 car companies choose aerospace companies to investigate the cause of Takata airbag failure
According to reports, the Takata Fault Airbag Investigation Alliance, which consists of the world's top ten automakers, recently announced that the group has selected Orbital ATK to investigate the cause of the failure of Takada airbags. Orbital ATK is an aerospace and defense technology company that specializes in rocket propulsion systems, so it is easy to study the ammonium nitrate propellant composition used in Takada airbags, which is suspected to be the root cause of airbag failure. The top ten companies that have jointly investigated the Takada airbags are Toyota, Honda, Fiat Chrysler, BMW, Mazda, Ford, Subaru, Mitsubishi, Nissan and General Motors. The group also selected David Kelly, former acting director of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), as the head of the investigation project. Since 1999, Takada has been the only airbag manufacturer to use its current propellant. Former Takata staff and chemists said that the propellant will decompose when exposed to moisture and may cause an explosion if subjected to excessive external force.
